The most exciting and important event of the year for the Video Game Industry, the Electronic Entertainment Expo better known as E3 started this past Monday June 10th, 2013 in Los Angeles, CA. New exciting projects are being shown all week from many of the biggest video game publisher's and developer's. This years E3 has been one for the record books with exciting next generation Consoles on display by two of the Juggernauts in the industry Microsoft and Sony. Because it has been several years since both of these companies have launched new hardware it is clearly time for new technology.
Sony was first to announce next generation hardware called the PS4 or PlayStation 4 at a special invite only event held in New York City back on February 20th, 2013. Leading up to the event Sony PlayStation seemed to take over the mind share on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter using teaser's and slogan's like “The Future of PlayStation” and theq trending hash tag #Playstation2013. February 20th soon arrived and Sony PlayStation President and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. Andrew House was the first one on stage to officially announce Sony's next generation console's official name, the PlayStation 4 (PS4). Sony decided not to show the Console itself but showed a brand new controller which was a redesign, the Dualshock 4. At the PS4 event PlayStation also announced and showed several very exciting game projects that Sony's First Party Developer's were working on such as Guerrilla Games- Killzone Shadow Fall and Sucker Punch Studios' - Infamous Second Son. They followed with Third party studio Ubisoft's- WatchDogs which graphically was one of the best looking games to date. This was all due to the graphic capabilities of the newer technology inside the new PS4 console. Sony announced the PS4 will hit store shelves this coming Holiday season but held back on price details. The PS4 event was a huge success and got everyone's attention that covers and follow's the gaming industry.
A few months later Microsoft announced they also had a stand alone event planned to announce a big project. The event “A new generation revealed” would be held at Microsoft's Redmond Washington Campus on May 21st, 2013. The event arrived and in an enormous white tent set up in front of the Redmond building, President of Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft Don Mattrick was first on stage to announce Microsoft's next generation Video Game Console, would be called the Xbox One. Following the name of the console being revealed it was clear that this event was to talk about how the new console would interact with your cable provider to watch television, to stream movies and videos through the different services and how that would all be able to be controlled using both voice and hand and arm motions picked up by the included and always connected Xbox Kinect Camera. This event spent very little time talking about or showing the games and directly following the event, many social media ports and Video game media outlets exploded with talk of disappointment in the presentation of the Xbox One. Fans and writers alike were very confused at the message Microsoft gave at the event. Loyal fans of the Microsoft Xbox tried to stick up for Microsoft and its poorly received unveiling by using the message that Xbox wanted to get the boring stuff out of the way at that event so they could show nothing but games at the upcoming E3 event presentation which was coming in less than a month. Surveys and Opinion Poll's taken on several Video game sites and Facebook showed that between the two console companies announcement's, Sony's Playstation 4 was beating Microsoft's Xbox One, two to one votes.
Social media sites and Industry media sites like IGN.com and Gametrailers.com contained just some of the vocal fans and writers all cautiously optimistic that Microsoft would redeem itself at their E3 presentation. In the gaming industry at the end of the day everyone wants to see success, because a great console is good for everyone that loves video games not just for fans of that company. The better one company does will make the competition work that much harder to bring the best to the consumer. Competition is healthy and good for everyone. In the weeks just before the Electronic and Entertainment Expo (E3) a story came to light that Microsoft's Xbox One would not allow for Used Games to be sold, traded, and resold and this sparked a popular campaign on social media using the hash tag’s #PS4noDRM and #XboxOneNoDRM basically DRM is control over used games, trading, buying, and selling. This No DRM campaign gained momentum even getting big names from some of the Game developer's and Publisher's voicing their opinions. Microsoft probably never could have expected such a response about this issue by fans who wanted answers. Another issue that had gamers worried was the rumor that the XboxOne would have to always be connected to the internet. Many Gamers wrote on twitter and on various gaming sites saying that the decision to buy the Xbox One console would be based on if Used games would be allowed on the platform or not and if the console would require to always be connected to the internet. During this #NoDRm campaign we heard very little from Sony, It seemed like they were trying to steer clear. At the beginning of June Xbox One put out a statement attempting to clear up the issue with DRM but the poorly worded sentences only confused the issue more and may have added more fuel to the already raging fire that was the #NoDRM campaign.
Finally on the Morning of June 10th, 2013 it was Microsoft's time to shine, it was their chance to wow everyone in attendance and watching the video stream around the world. To everyone's surprise Microsoft took the stage for their E3 Press event and started with a bang by showing the first new game play for the once Sony PlayStation exclusive franchise Metal Gear Solid. Developer Konami's Metal Gear series was a Sony exclusive title for several years until recently releasing an HD collection of their games on the Xbox 360. The Franchise is now a multiplatform title on both Sony's and Microsoft's consoles. Konami's next game in the series is called Metal Gear Solid V, The Phantom Pain and it looks amazing with blockbuster cut scenes and its awesome next gen. Technology. But this was just one of many games that were showed at Xbox One's Presentation the first morning of E3 2013. Xbox also showed amazing games like the Xbox One exclusive Quantum Break made by the developer Remedy. Another Xbox exclusive game announced Sunset Overdrive is being developed by long time Sony exclusive studio Insomniac Games. Some of the other titles shown were Dead Rising 3, Forza Motorsport 5, Ryse Son of Rome, and finally Titanfall developed by Respawn Entertainment a studio who came together only a few years ago when Infinity Ward the creators of the well known Series Call Of Duty was left split almost in half after creative minds Vince Zampella and Jason West left Infinity Ward taking roughly 40 employees with them to create Respawn Entertainment. Titanfall is one of many games that Xbox showed on stage but it's one that will be on gamers minds until the Xbox One launches this Holiday season. Toward the end of their presentation Microsoft announced a price point of 499. U.S. Dollars. The Xbox One has a redesigned controller that looks very similar to the Xbox 360's controller but has minor adjustments to things like the thumb sticks, battery, and the overall shape has been flattened. After the Microsoft event finished, social media sites lit up with happy Xbox Fans talking about how great they did for the event. Several Video game sites also had great things to say about the presentation and the games that were shown during the event but the how used games will be affected was just one of the things that was still being questioned the other was the fact that Microsoft announced that on the XboxOne you would have to have your system connected to the internet and that your XboxOne would have to connect to the internet at least once every 24 hours to do things like validate games and download updates. The major problem with this is that not everyone has an internet connection. this creates is a big problem for many fans and may be a huge factor in deciding to buy the Xbox One or not. In an interview on Tuesday, Xbox's Don Mattrick was asked by Geoff Keighley of GameTrailers.com and Spike TV - “what about the people who do not have an internet connection?” Don Mattrick responded “Fortunately we have a product for people who aren’t able to get some form of connectivity,” he said bluntly “It’s called Xbox 360.” Geoff Keighley facial expression showed he was taken back by this comment, and Geoff responded “So stick with 360, that’s your message if you don’t like it?” Many people that saw this interview I'm sure felt exactly the same way as Geoff Keighley did judging by his facial expressions and tone of voice. On social media in response to this interview many gamers talked about being insulted and were commenting that it seems Microsoft may be out of touch with their consumers. On Monday following the Xbox One Event their was a sense that many felt Microsoft overall put on a great presentation. For most of Monday afternoon Video Game Media sites had live shows and wrote articles talking about the Xbox presentation being successful. Later in the afternoon the subject matter changed becaue the real question that was on almost everyone’s mind was how will Sony do at their event that was coming at 6pm PST. The success of Sony's February Announcement event for the PS4 really did a great thing for the PlayStation brand and had all eyes on PlayStation up until earlier that morning when Microsoft put together an exciting event with tons of exciting new games. The Sony PlayStation event started about ten minutes late. Once it got going they started by showing several games coming to their current generation console the PS3 like The Walking Dead 400 days by telltale games, Grand Turismo 6, Batman Origins, and Rockstar Games highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto V. Just shy of an hour into the presentation Sony switched gears, President and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. Andrew House walked on stage and finally started talking about the PlayStation 4. Another man walked on stage and handed Mr. House a case and for the first time the actual PlayStation 4 (PS4) console itself was shown on stage to the world. Sony made the decision back in February at the announcement event not to show the console which seemed to pay off at this very moment by building up the anticipation to see it. After showing the Hardware Sony talked about their music, video and streaming services for several minutes but quickly moved on, unlike Xbox who spent over an hour at their event in May talking about their services instead of upcoming games. After talking about video, and other services President of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios Shu Yoshida came to the stage with a giant smile on his face and a happiness that seemed to radiate through the crowd which you could see on every persons face at that event. Shu Yoshida showed projects coming the PS4 such as the Sony exclusive brand new IP (intellectual property) created by ReadyAtDawn Studios- The Order 1886, they followed with a reel of some games they already showed at the February event and then some exciting games from indie developers that will be coming to the PS4. One feature that many are excited for that Sony is proud to talk about is how easy it is for an Indie (Independent) developer to their game on the PS4. The Xbox One requires a publisher which creates a wall to overcome for many indie developer's. Next Sony showed off several game including Square Enix's game Final Fantasy XV. Square Enix next showed Kingdom Hearts III. The Third Party Studio Ubisoft came on stage to show Assassins Creed Black flag followed by WatchDogs. President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America Jack Tretton walked on stage with a certain confidence at this point, he started talking about 140 games currently being developed for the PS4 and many of those games being Sony PlayStation 4 Exclusive titles. Then Jack Tretton began addressing the used game topic that has been on gamers minds by saying “PS4 won't impose any new restrictions on used games” This statement caused the crowd to erupt in cheers of happiness and clapping the loudest response to anything that happened so far on that stage all day. Jack Tretton followed by saying with a smile on his face and sarcastically “I guess that's a good thing”. He then further clarified what it meant that they would not restrict used games and once again even louder this time cheered, chanted, and gave a standing ovation, Sony acknowledging this topic, listening to what the fans wanted and addressing it in such a positive way was the smartest thing Sony could have done. Mr. Tretton went on and once again had the crowd chanting and cheering by taking a stab directly at Microsoft and saying that the PS4 does not require an online connection and you do not need to check in every 24 hours. This was specifically in response to Xbox One requiring Xbox One owners to have an online connection and to check in online once every 24 hours. Jack Tretton wrapped up this section. Next the developer Bethesda showed there game The Elder Scrolls Online followed by developer Bungies sci-fi blockbuster game Destiny. A few minutes later in closing comments Andrew House came back on stage to announce the PlayStation 4 will cost 399. U.S. Dollars which being one hundred dollars cheaper than the Xbox One got one final and incredible crowd pleasing response bringing many in attendance to their feet cheering for Sony.
Immediately following Sony's roughly two hour event several PS4 hash tags were trending on twitter with gamers excited and happy claiming Sony won E3. Shortly after the event many of the gaming sites also started publishing videos and going live to talk about Sony's event and almost all were in agreement that Sony had the best showing out of them and Microsoft. Also many writers and Gaming site video hosts agreed the way Sony talked directly to the fans really meant something special and was the smartest thing they could have done as well as giving gamers a great price point for the PS4 system. At one point the following day both Amazon and GameStop told sites in interviews that the PS4 Pre-orders were outselling the XboxOne.
E3 2013 ends today June 13th 2013 and it has been a very exciting week for both of Microsoft and for Sony, The other major Video Game hardware Company Nintendo chose not to hold a Press event at this years E3 but did have a booth on the show floor and created some news of its own announcing a few games of their own. What this years show created for every gamer is options and it is always great to have a choice when it comes to what you want to play next. In the coming months we will see many more games being announced from many first and third party developers and it will definitely be an exciting Holiday season for everyone who loves playing video games.
